The record length contributes to a scheme that allows you to treat an NVEM page, or a section of a page, as a series of "records". You might visualize one record as equivalent to a row of cells in a spreadsheet. The record length determines how many bytes in total represent one row, or record.
A record can have a minimum length of 1 and a maximum length of 255 bytes.
