When I am wearing my tech support hat, one of the tools I find useful is AACircuit by Andreas Weber. AACircuit is a schematic editor program that lets you draw simple electronic schematics using only printable characters. That means you can send them by email without messy attachments, worrying about file formats etc. The program has a library of the most commonly used electronic circuit symbols, and you can add your own. The only requirement for viewing the schematics is that the email reader be set to a fixed pitch font such as Courier New. Here's an example of AACircuit's output:
